John 3:16–21 Verse by Verse | HFD Ministries Deep Dive
John 3:16 is probably the most quoted verse in the entire Bible. It is also one of the most misread.
A lot of people encounter this passage and feel fear, pressure, or anxiety. As if God is essentially saying believe this or else. But when you read the passage slowly, paying attention to what Jesus actually says word by word, something entirely different emerges. This is not a threat passage. It is an unveiling passage.
This Deep Dive companion resource works through each verse of John 3:16–21 carefully, paying close attention to the original Greek words and the surrounding context in John's Gospel. What does perish actually mean in the Greek? What is condemnation according to Jesus Himself, not according to assumption? What is judgment in this passage, and who is doing it? And what does it look like to come into the light?
Jesus defines condemnation directly in verse 19. He does not leave it to inference. And what He says is not what most people were taught. Condemnation is not a verdict God introduces in response to failure. It is the tragic condition of remaining in darkness when light has come. The tragedy is not God rejecting people. It is people resisting love because they do not yet believe love is safe.
Includes a full Greek word notes section covering apollymi, kosmos, krino, and elencho, plus a complete scripture reference list.
The governing reality of this study: John 3:16–21 is not a threat passage. The Gospel is not God trying to keep you out. It is God coming to bring you home.
